Cherwell Service Management Recognized by ITSM Review for its Outside IT Capabilities and Focus

The term ‘outside IT’ is growing in mind-set and maturity within the IT service management (ITSM) industry, and Cherwell Software is one ITSM solution provider with “a leading focus and capabilities in this area,” reports The ITSM Review in its newest competitive review, entitled ‘Outside IT’.

For The ITSM Review, ITSM Consultant Barclay Rae evaluated four participating vendors on their software’s ability to support and manage business needs beyond traditional IT and ITSM operational areas. According to Barclay, there is a huge opportunity for IT teams to re-invest themselves as true business partners by using their skills and knowledge and the ITSM tools already in their possession to drive efficiencies beyond IT. This is the essence of Outside IT.
“Cherwell has excellent examples of IT driven non-IT applications and is focused on IT enablement and the use of the toolset for collaborative working,” says Barclay. “Cherwell offers a strong mix of product capability and a model which provides a secure technical framework that clients can work within to build their own solutions.”
Simon Kent of Cherwell Software says that IT has come a long way from when it was viewed, perhaps, like an ‘island unto itself’, disengaged from the rest of the business.
“IT teams are now taking their ITSM platform and are expanding it, changing it, reshaping it, and moulding it to help other departments like Human Resources, Purchasing and Facilities Management effectively manage business processes and workflow,” says Kent. “Those that do this, have seen their profiles rise, and the value they provide to the business has increased dramatically because they are providing solutions to other business needs and business users quickly and cost effectively and are playing a role in creating business advantages.”
Kent says that until now, Outside IT has been going on in an isolated world, and thinks it’s great that people are now talking more about it, celebrating it and sharing successes. He suggests that service desks or IT teams new to Outside IT should consider creating a specific role with the responsibility to get out into the business and provide a business technology advisory service that specifically looks to see how the ITSM technology and associated best practices can be applied to those Outside IT business challenges.
