On March 3rd 2015, the UK team representing Cherwell Software™ at the itSMF Norway Conference, disembarked a plane at Oslo Airport, Gardermoen, and headed to the recently opened Thon Hotel at Oslo Airport, a modern conference and business hotel situated five minutes from the airport’s main terminal…our home for the next three days.
I am a Partner Manager at Cherwell Software responsible for the Northern European Territory that includes the Nordics and France. itSMF Norway was Cherwell Software’s first exhibition event in the Nordics so naturally, we had high hopes and expectations to make our mark in this territory.
Since 2003, the IT Service Management Forum (itSMF) in Norway has organised conferences on an annual basis with ever-increasing attendance figures. The conference is the largest IT Management forum in Scandinavia and enjoys widespread recognition and interest from around the world.
There was a real sense of occasion as we set-up the Cherwell stand the evening before the event started. As far as I was concerned, we were the new kids on the block and I desperately wanted to be on the same level playing field as the other exhibitors. Our exhibition stand really did us proud. First goal scored – back of the net!
The second goal came after I had the chance to meet one of my childhood heroes who just happened to be the keynote speaker at the event. They say you should never meet your heroes, right? That statement was shattered when I had the privilege to meet and spend time with former England international football player and manager Kevin Keegan OBE. Kevin Keegan is one of the best-known individuals in English football. A former England international player, he went on to manage several English clubs, most notably Newcastle United, as well as the English national side.
Kevin Keegan was a keynote speaker at the Norway event, and he proved to be a captivating and motivating speaker, focusing on topics such as teamwork and leadership. The evening before the event commenced, I met Kevin in the bar and was thrilled the following morning when he addressed me by name as we headed to the conference, ahead of the 700 expected delegates. Second goal scored!
Cherwell Software was scheduled to present on the second day of the event on the carefully selected subject matter, “Why a trusted vendor relationship is key to customer success.” Rather than talk about features and products, I was keen to talk about trust, relationships and value in the form of a collaboration or partnership. In essence: teamwork…just like Kevin talked about. The presentation was well received. Goal number three – a hat-trick!
In summary, the itSMF Norway conference was a positive experience all around. We successfully created awareness for the Cherwell Software brand, engaged with end users, prospects and partners, generated new opportunities, and I got the chance to meet a true sporting legend. That’s a total of four goals scored.
