Portal Error: Could Not Retrieve Config - Application Business Object

I'm getting the following error when trying to link a configuration item to a service request on our customer portal.  The list of available configuration items opens, and the error is produced when selecting one of the listed CIs.  The portal role has view rights to all configuration objects.  I get the error regardless of the CI type that is being linked.  Any thoughts on what could be causing this error?
